From Weekend Hobby to Something More
Wall's Woodshop took shape in 2020 with no business plan and no expectations. It started as a hobby in my garage, a chance to learn something new, work with my hands, and create pieces for our home, as well as for family and friends.
I built wine barrel cabinets, cutting boards, furniture, shelves, and custom home decor. Every project taught me something different and gave me another opportunity to improve, not only as a woodworker, but as a designer.
Looking back, I realize it wasn't the finished projects that kept drawing me back to the shop. It was the creative process itself. I loved taking an idea, working through the details, and watching it gradually become something real.
The Journey Behind Every Project
Over time, I realized it wasn't any one part of woodworking that kept drawing me back to the shop, it was the entire journey. Every project begins with an idea and gradually takes shape through thoughtful design, careful planning, quality materials, and countless small decisions along the way. From the first pencil sketch to the final coat of finish, each stage brings its own satisfaction. Together, these moments tell the story behind every project I create.

For me, woodworking has never been just about cutting lumber or assembling pieces together. It's about bringing an idea to life through design, selecting beautiful hardwood, and patiently refining that idea until every detail has a purpose.
Whether it’s the smell of freshly cut wood, or studying the grain of each board, or watching the wood come alive as the finish is applied, it’s these moments that remind me that every project is more than the sum of its parts.
Some projects are built to fill a space. Others are built to preserve a story.
One Idea Led To Another
As my woodworking skills grew, so did my curiosity. Every project presented a new opportunity to learn, improve, and explore new ideas. Along the way I added CNC carving and laser engraving, opening up new possibilities for creativity, precision, and personalization.
Then something unexpected happened.
As a serving member of the RCMP, I'd always appreciated the traditions and history of the Force. Like many members, my Red Serge and Stetson spent most of their time hanging quietly in a closet or tucked away in a trunk between ceremonial occasions, while the handful of challenge coins I'd collected over the years remained hidden away in a drawer.
One day I found myself asking a simple question:
Why?
These weren't ordinary possessions. They represented years of service, memories, achievements, and traditions that deserved to be displayed, not hidden away. I found challenge coin displays on the market, but none felt personal or meaningful enough to tell that story. So, I designed one myself.
That single project changed the direction of Wall's Woodshop.
It reminded me that the projects I enjoy most aren't simply beautiful pieces of woodworking, they're thoughtful solutions to meaningful problems. One idea naturally led to another.
If a challenge coin display could celebrate a career, why couldn't the same idea be applied to the Red Serge and Stetson? When I couldn't find display pieces that honoured what those items represented, I designed and built them myself. What began with the “Badge Coin Display” eventually grew into the “Serge Cabinet”, the “Stetson Press”, and an entire collection created to honour RCMP service and preserve the traditions and stories they represent.
The RCMP Heritage Collection wasn't the reason I started woodworking, it simply became one chapter in a much bigger story.
Designed With Purpose
Although a number of my projects are inspired by RCMP heritage, they all begin the same way, with an idea.
Whether I'm designing a heritage display piece, a custom piece of furniture, or a personalized gift, my goal remains the same: to create something that is thoughtful, functional, and built to last. I enjoy solving problems through design, refining every detail, and creating pieces that feel like they were made with purpose, not simply manufactured.
Over time, I've come to realize that the finished project is only part of the story. What truly gives a piece meaning is what it represents. A retirement after decades of service. A family gathered around a handcrafted table. A personalized gift celebrating an important milestone. Those are the moments that transform a project into something much more than wood and craftsmanship.
My hope is that every project leaving my workshop becomes more than something beautiful to look at. I hope it's something that's used, appreciated, and enjoyed for years to come. Something that preserves memories, celebrates achievements, or simply becomes part of a family's everyday life.
Creating has always been my passion. Designing is how I express it.
Wood has simply become the medium that allows those ideas to take shape.
Looking Ahead
What began as a weekend hobby has grown into something far more meaningful than I ever imagined.
As I look toward retirement from the RCMP, I'm excited to spend more time doing what I've always enjoyed most, designing, creating, and exploring new ideas. I don't know exactly where that journey will lead, and I think that's part of what makes it exciting. There will always be another idea to sketch, another challenge to solve, and another opportunity to create something meaningful.
Wall's Woodshop will continue to evolve, just as it always has, one idea leading naturally to the next.
